About Us

We are a contemporary dance theatre company dedicated to our own expansion as individuals and dance artists. We aim to be inclusive in our dance-making, ensuring the continued expansion of our audiences, and to create and perform works which stay with you long after you have witnessed them.

expandance is an Irish-American company, founded in Dublin in 2006, but whose members have been working together for almost a decade. We currently work in Dublin, Ireland and New York City and have produced shows where members perform to audiences simultaneously in both cities. The company combines the energies of Rachel Wynne, Laurie Schneider and Alicia Christofi-Walshe, as well as the lovely people who join us on a project-to-project basis, to make honest, emotionally expansive work, designed to engage both dance and non-dance audiences. We consciously create from a place of presence, joy and integrity.

About the expandance technique

We believe that having a daily practice is vital for every dance artist. Our practice, the expandance technique, honours above all else openness of mind, spirit and emotions, which in turn allows us to be 'out of our own way' when it comes to moving the body. The technique is, at it's simplest, an approach to dance-making that stems from the centre of our being (Divine Mind, located at the 'hara' or centre of gravity in the body) and enables us to tune in to ourselves and each other in a powerful and present way. We consciously aim to move from this place rather than from the intellectual mind.

Practicing this technique on a daily basis also helps us stay somewhat emotionally connected even when thousands of miles apart, thereby enabling audiences to feel a tangible connection between us when performing pieces in two countries at the same time.
